Dian believes that sport builds character and creates team spirit; a killer instinct and a winning attitude that cannot be instilled through ordinary interaction or direction. He believes that sport is the ‘balancing factor’ in a person’s life. This is why he is adamant in creating opportunities for people to find that special talent while assisting them to grow and excel. He has been creating local and global champions while bringing glory to Sri Lanka.

Dian developed a passion for sport started during his school days, a passion which has stayed with him ever since. He was the Royal College flyweight champion for four consecutive years and the National Junior Flyweight champion in 1975. Although his prime focus was boxing, he also represented Royal College in athletics.
After his entry into the corporate world, he was instrumental in leading team Slimline (MAS) to become champions at the ABA National Boxing Championship for 9 consecutive years. 2006 saw Dian becoming the chef de mission for the Sri Lankan contingent at the Doha Asian Games where his daughters Shahili Gomes and Elisha Gomes represented the Sri Lankan Synchronized Swimming team and were placed 7th in the finals.
In 2007, Sri Lanka’s foremost boxer, Anuruddha Rathnayake, qualified to participate in boxing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This was a momentous achievement for the whole country, as it was after a 40-year Olympic lull for Sri Lanka that this breakthrough occurred. He was also the chef de mission to the Sri Lankan contingent during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Taking over the Presidency of the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka from 2004-2009, and being Sri Lanka’s boxing corner man at the ring for a period of 18 years, which included, Olympic games, three Asian Games, three Commonwealth Games and three World Championships. Dian provided strategic leadership and direction to guide Sri Lanka to a noteworthy position in international boxing. During this time, he also served as the Vice President of the National Olympic Committee and as the Founder President of the National Fencing Association introducing the sport to Sri Lanka.
Dian was the first ever Sri Lankan to be appointed as one of the 14 members of the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS) in 2013, which is the key sports policy advisory body to the Commonwealth Secretariat.
2020 saw Dian’s appointment as an executive committee member to the World Boxing Body of AIBA, the supreme and most prestigious global association dedicated to boxing. He is the first Sri Lankan to represent the country in this prestigious body; a leap for Sri Lanka in the world policy making body of Boxing. Dian also serves as the current President of the Sri Lanka Boxing Association, and he is a member of the Women’s Commission in the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) and an Executive Committee member of the Asian Boxing Federation (ASBC).
